How Are Bats Able to Communicate with One Another?
Communication is one of the most important features of animals. Every type of animal is able to communicate with other species of the same animal. Some are able to even communicate with other species of animals.
Take the cat for example. The way a cat cries, purrs, or meows tells other cats a lot about how it is feeling and what its intentions are. It also relays that same type of information to you. You know that when a cat is hissing or is making a very ominous sounding cry, that it is to your advantage to back away for a moment. This animal means business.
Every animal has similar types of responses. This is how they are able to communicate, not only angry or threatening messages, but friendly ones as well.
Bats Communicate as Well
Knowing this, it should not be surprising to you to know that bats communicate as well. In fact, these animals have one of the most sophisticated communication systems that researchers and scientists have discovered.
For the longest time, scientists were convinced that bats communicated solely as a large colony. Messages were sent to the entire group, with little to no interaction between individual bats. That is no longer the belief.
What has been discovered is that bats have a very sophisticated social system that includes communication between two bats or a small group of them.
Echolocation Is More Than Sonar
When most of us hear of the term echolocation, we think of the sophisticated system that bats use to locate themselves. This is a sonar like system that sends out an ultrasonic pulse that returns to the bat. That pulse is then processed through the bat’s brain, letting it know of potential predators, food, or even where its home is located.
However, the echolocation system does much more than just that. This is the same system that is used by the animals to communicate with one another. Through the use of this sonar like system and pheromones, the bat is able to communicate messages that warn other bats, let another bat know of its intentions in terms of courtship, or to communicate where food or other resources can be found.
Often, bats will greet a large group from their colony by using this system. They can speak to thousands of bats at the same time, or to just one or two. It is truly remarkable how this system works, and it really doesn’t use any kind of vocalization process to work.
However, bats are also known to create sounds that send a message to other bats as well. Usually these vocalized sounds inform other bats about danger. However, some bat species use this sound as they approach prey. It is not known whether this is to simply scare the animal or insect or has some other kind of meaning, but there are many instances where bats will employ this kind of vocalization when they are about to strike. It definitely is a sound that can be quite terrifying.
